Nicholas Daunt
Trans-continental abstract painter Nicholas Daunt enjoyed a fast-paced youth, notably whilst creating multiple U.S shows, then enjoying a successful painting and advertising career in Australia during the ‘80’s and ‘90’s. However after the millennium came a sea-change to the NSW coast, and so with his new-found spiritual approach to a simple life he has created this latest series of large oils on canvas…. works in rhythm with the tides seen from his studio.

Daunt’s work reflects some of the influences absorbed whilst in North Carolina painting shows for the voracious gallery scene in New York in the early 1980’s. Now aged 70, this distinguished abstract painter has mastered with confidence his approach to splashing paint in explosive swathes of brilliant colour across his large canvases.

As a proponent of the still deeply influential New York School of painters from the 1940s and 1950s, Daunt pays homage to the likes of De Kooning, Pollock and Kline. Daunt says “I like [their] execution of free style and above all their philosophy, which is based on freedom of expression.”

Born to Irish parents in England in 1937, Daunt was fortunate to attend the Eastbrook Boys School in the U.K. on an art scholarship. In 1960 he moved to Australia where he worked as a graphic artist and designer in fabric. Daunt holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts and a post-graduate diploma in professional studies in painting from The City Arts Institute of Sydney.

At the start of Daunt’s career in Sydney, Elwyn Lyn wrote in The Australian, “Nolde would have condoned Daunt’s jarring of wide, tranquil skies with sudden explosions of colour. Daunt’s work beholds a loose landscape quality which brings with it a familiarity to the mysterious and enigmatic world of the abstract.”

Nicholas Daunt is represented in public and private collections worldwide.
