"Anderson’s creative eye stretches from the minute to the colossal. Each tiny element is allowed its significance. The paintings, prints and drawings are made first with broad marks and then built upon with smaller and smaller strokes. This method itself suggests the breadth of our field of vision, and the close and far telescopic sight. The landscape is thrown towards the viewer, as if asking for inspection and respect." Extract from article by Marian Crawford.
There have been numerous visits to Sydney over the last three years revealing places and views, from bridges, coves, gardens, roads, ferries and boats.
Immediate impressions and responses to places such as Wendy Whiteley’s verdant garden and the contemplative bush of Bantry Bay in Middle Harbour and the madness of trying to navigate our way through the Australia Day Ferry race on a small yacht are all subjects for paintings.
As the title suggests “Going About “is a sailing term called out to all on board before changing direction. The paintings in this exhibition are responding to very different places, from the immediate and past perspectives using expressive colour and simple iconography. There are busy urban environments and natural bush settings, and mixtures of the two.
The most inspiring impetus for the show was a long weekend of sailing and exploring the waterways around Sydney Harbour this year and reading about the history of the area through the wonderful books “Tales from Sydney Cove” by Kate Challis, “The Art of the First Fleet” by Bernard Smith and Alwyne Wheeler and “The birth of Sydney” by Tim Flannery.
Images from these histories and my own memories and impressions have combined into this recent collection of paintings and drawings. Sue Anderson 2007
Anderson has been exhibiting successfully since 1983 and her work is found in numerous private & public collections including Artbank, ANZ Bank, Art Gallery of NSW & Rio Tinto.
