"As a young child I moved between Daylesford, Maidestone and Sheparton, before settling at the age of 5 in a small country town Euroa. Euroa Primary and Secondary education was the only option and I never looked back. Sport and I agreed to disagree as my parents split, and in the old fashioned sense, I picked up an instrument, a fishing rod and a bag of worms, and I ran for the hills."
In 2004 Gus lived with artist-father Michael Leunig in a small aboriginal community, Lockhart River at the very Northen tip of Cape York Peninsula. Working in the local Arts Centre alongside local Aboriginal artists his burgeoning love for the territory, people and its isolation evoked an overwhelming desire to paint. Gus was reminded of his childhood and the most basic of needs - fishing, hunting and laughing. |
